The impact of cotton in the economic restructuring in Great Britain

The advent of the Industrial Revolution in Great Great Britain provided a massive boost to cotton produce, as textiles appeared as Britain?s leading export. In 1738, Lewis Paul and John Wyatt, of Birmingham, Britain, patented the roller spinning machine, and the flyer-and-bobbin system for drawing cotton to a more even thickness using two sets of rollers that traveled at different speeds. Later on the discovery of the spinning jenny in 1764 and Richard Arkwrights spinning frame (based on the roller spinning machine) in 1769 enabled British weavers to produce cotton yarn and fabric at way higher rates. From the late 18th century onwards, the British town of Manchester bought the pet name Cottonopolis due to the cotton industrys omnipresence in the town, and Manchester’s role as the center of the worldwide cotton trade.
